ALBUM REVIEW: Adrianne Lenker Strips down to Her Elements on ‘abysskiss’

An insular, stunning record from the Big Thief singer.

abysskiss, the second solo album from Big Thief vocalist and songwriter Adrianne Lenker, is an insular, stunning record that’s sure to be a front-runner for Album of the Year among all lovers of delicate indie folk.

Stripped down to just her voice and her guitar, Lenker thrives when she evokes the ghostly hybrid of pain and passion she’s so gifted at summoning with her main band. Her voice, soft and adept at damaging with destructive impact, is often placed front and center, revealing her vulnerability in the words she speaks.

Favorites include “from,” “cradle,” “symbol,” “what can you say” and the title track.
