ALBUM REVIEW: Petite Noir Melds African and Western Into Something Entirely New on ‘La Maison Noir’

La Maison Noir / The Black House is the new visual EP from Petite Noir, the nom de plume of South African “noirwave” artist Yannick Ilunga.

Musically, the project is another genre-bending joyride that incorporates post-punk, hip-hop, electronics and whatever else fits, along with features from Danny Brown, Saul Williams and Petite’s wife Rochelle “Rha Rha” Nembhard.

Just like his music, the symbol-laden visuals fuse new and old, traditional and technological, Western and African elements to make a powerful and stunningly beautiful impact. With or without the visual component, La Maison Noir is a striking and original work from an artist operating in a lane all his own.
